"Checked this place out on a Saturday afternoon before showing up for dinner and discovered the place was closed. The closed sign suggested we try the M Bar next door for dining. The M Bar used to be the hotel bar where you got drinks...and pub style food. Not surprisingly, it now had a dinner menu almost identical to Le Maxime’s. The wine offerings were not quite the same but in most other respects, it was Le Maxime but located next door in a bar type setting. I asked our server about the changeover and got a wonderful explanation in French that I interpreted to mean something like this was a temporary arrangement. We ate in a stone tunnel that had a mix of dining and cocktail tables and some very pleasant background music with some tunes folks from the US would recognize. Before doing this review, let me opine that somewhere in the French Culinary Instruction Manual, the authors left out the section on how to properly cook beef. I say this because I have found a uniform beef preparation in France that ranges from medium to well done. That’s the reason I rarely order beef in France. So now about the meal. The amuse a bouche was a slice of shrimp atop a tomato leek parfait. Creative and quite tasty. We each had the entrée of Croq Monsieur a la Grand Mere which was a poached egg atop a slice of baguette crustini coated with a layer of cheese that tasted like from the gruyere family. Something incredibly simple but elegantly presented and wonderful tasting. For the plat, my wife had a duo of rolled fish filets that were poached. One was salmon and the other a very tasty white fish. They were served with a purple mashed root vegetable mix. She declared them excellent. My plat was two pieces of filet mignon, which was why the diatribe about French Chef beef preparation above. The meat was good quality, so why ruin it by cooking it until there is no trace of red? They do make meat thermometers in France, don’t they? (Alors! Arrêter le cuisiner à C). The meat was good, the accompanying veggies and sauce wonderful, and the dish would have been perfect if the meat were cooked to medium rare. But as an example of how little importance French chefs attach to beef preparation, I have NEVER been asked about a degree of “doneness” for a piece of beef in France. Small wonder I rarely order it. I did this night because the other choices did not appeal. The result was passable but given the quality of the cut could have been wonderful if cooked to medium rare. My wife skipped the third course and I opted for the classic grand café which included along with the espresso a mini crème brulee, a raspberry on a chunk of thick chocolate mousse, a whipped crème fraiche with marshmallow bits and berries underneath and a pure chocolate lace. She got the chocolate half, naturally. The wine selection was decent but most offerings were full bottles, not what we were looking for that evening. We chose the glass option and each had a very drinkable Chablis at for a pour. Overall, we considered the meal a great value for the price of including aperitif and glasses of wine. I’m not sure if Maxime’s will ever return, but for now I have no qualms recommending the M Bar next door."
