"We were looking forward to a weekend away in Crickhowell and had stayed at The Bear before. However, our recent stay was disappointing. The room, a Better Double in the annexe, was not what we expected, the bathroom was tiny, the heating didn't work and the TV aerial was broken. Breakfast was good, but dinner was awful. The same menu was used in the dining room and bar, and eating in the overspill room of the bar was dark, dingy and depressing. The menu was unimaginative, and a very poor choice for a vegetarian with an allergy to peppers!! On Saturday, we were unable to leave Crickhowell as there was a large group of Classic Car owners staying at the hotel and commandeering the small car park, and if we had moved our car, there was a large chance that we would not have been able to get back in. When we tried to give feedback whilst checking out, no real interest was shown."

"Recommended by the people we hired our canal boat from though they had never been there! Brilliant traditional country pub in the middle of Govilon about a third of a mile down a steep hill from the canal moorings. Lunch was a nice relaxed affair...and our waitress knew her beers and made excellent suggestions as to which to have. The snacks and light lunches were tasty and well-presented and inexpensive. We returned for dinner to find a livley pub with friendly locals and staff and really good, honest, fairly priced food. Well worth returning to."

"We have had two Sunday lunches here recently whilst our kitchen was being fitted. The meat is always sooooo tender and good portions. The service is very good even though they are always busy. Our daughter rated their Nut Roast as being one of the best she’s ever had in a restaurant. Very lucky to have this on our doorstep. Oh, and dogs are very welcome everywhere."

"The fish and chips at this restaurant are fantastic. Although they only accept cash, which may not be convenient for everyone, I personally appreciate it as it helps keep cash transactions alive. The owner is very honest and enthusiastic. This place has the best fish and chips around. They also offer a great selection of kid-friendly items at a good price. The service is for take out and it is best for dinner."

"Food and Drinks: Our expectations for The Vine Tree were quite high, but we ended up feeling a little disappointed. On the positive side, the menu offers a more interesting selection than most places in the area. The restaurant staff were attentive and skilled, which was fantastic. However, the quality of the food didn’t quite meet our expectations. It seems like the chef may have overdone it with the salt, as all our savory dishes were heavily seasoned; otherwise, the flavors were excellent. Two of us ordered dishes with king prawns, but they turned out tough and rubbery, which was disappointing. On the bright side, the duck was delicious and perfectly cooked. The steak was good but not exceptional; with so many venues serving steak, it’s hard to truly stand out. Overall, we found it difficult to add The Vine Tree to our “must eat here again” list."
