"Didn't stay here, as live locally. We went for dinner. Food drinks: We went to try the Taster Menu as I'd heard good things about the restaurant. The online menu looked really interesting so I booked. The refurbishment of the restaurant is very well done. Well spaced tables and lovely and warm too. Everything about our dinner was exemplary. I can't praise the food highly enough. Our request for a change of one starter resulted in a specially made langoustine and vegetable creation in a broth, quite stunning to eat! The whole menu was a delight and portions are ample and not too small as in some restaurants that have taster menus. The staff are very well trained, efficient and friendly. Nothing is too much trouble. The head sommelier is knowledgeable about all the wines and offered us a red wine not on the list which was very unusual and really well matched to the meat courses. We spent a superb evening in very pleasant surroundings. It's safe to say that this restaurant is the most accomplished in the Colchester area. We are very pleased to have found it as it's not far away! Our previous favourite is in Norwich, which involves staying overnight, so we save on hotels and petrol! This is a genuine fine dining establishment, so price reflects this. The quality of the produce used is very high, so we're happy to pay for this. We'll be returning regularly as the menus change frequently, another plus point. The chef is very creative and imaginative in his use of ingredients and obviously is very skilful. If you want to dine on stunning food and well chosen wines, then look no further. Thank you to all the splendid members of the team for our evening."

The restaurant experience was: Sophistication. Classy. Cosy. Attentive staff. Excellent customer service. I was impressed with general customer service. I wasn't too blow away by the duck meal on the a la carte meal, though. Rooms: 5 Service: 5 Location: 5

Had a light meal in the courtyard, so this review is of the dining experience and NOT the room experience. I stopped by on a really hot day and was after a healthy snack to get me going again on my bike ride. The team was very resourceful in whisking up a bespoke refreshing iced green tea and lemon. The ham croquettes also tasted great. Light crunchy shel giving way to a delicate core. Great experience overall. The courtyard is also beautiful to have a relaxed dining experience. Food drinks: Delicious

We had the most amazing all round dining and hospitality experience at the Angel this week. Firstly the staff were welcoming and warm whilst maintaining high standards of service, the food was literally fantastic, it’s been a very long time since I have enjoyed a meal so much in such convivial surroundings. There was a really relaxed feel to the restaurant. To top that our room was fab, beautifully decorated and very comfortable. Hope to return very soon. Nearby activities: Go take a look at the Church in the village just behind the Angel, it’s amazing.

We stayed at the Angel Inn for our 1st wedding anniversary, we had read good things, but we were genuinely bowled over by how great out experience was. Everything was superb, but the food and wine in particular were astonishing! While staying we had the Full tasting menu, but for pescatarians, with wine pairings. From the Amuse bouche all the way through to the petite fours at the end, the whole menu was perfectly balanced. Particular highlights were the pistachio cake with poached apricot and curry milk, it really blew our minds. The service was excellent throughout and the time the staff took to explain the dishes and the wine pairings (particularly a last minute wine substitution that was...

My husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary at The Angel. What a find! Loved every minute of our stay. The staff were so attentive on arrival, our room was gorgeous, lovely touches such as air conditioning and under floor heating in the bathroom were appreciated, as well as the huge shower. We enjoyed our glasses of cava on arrival and relaxed in the bar having selected a couple of glasses of wine from the impressive wine list. we had booked the full tasting menu for our stay and decided to add the wine pairing as well. Oh man the food was incredible, beautiful presented, served so well by the staff, the passion and love that had gone into every single plate of food just came through...

"Usually my wife is the one who fills up the comment cards, feedback forms and writes few words on tripadvisor of the place. Usually we are a very happy, cheerful and satisfied customer most of the times. But after this dinner at the Lakes Restaurant I had a feeling I have to write a review by myself. As I am an Italian person I love food (to eat and also to cook) enjoying wine, sweets and coffee too... So I have to say if someone is really passionate about to have a good dinner this place is not the right choice. Bar is lovely, bit outdated but does the job. We discovered on arrival the bar person was already half drunk speaking and laughing even more loud than the guests! And there was a young guy in blue vest, white shirt was kind of annoying too who could not stop saying to every single person around him he is very busy has to look after a big function but till we left the bar after our aperitif he was still hanging around and chatting to his co-workers. Not a problem at all, I thought someone else will looking after his guests... Lakes restaurant looks nice, good atmosphere but the problems are just started here... Sat down, got menus in hand bread arrives in few minutes, before we even opened the menu and had a look... Nice quick service, bread sliced, slightly warm, looks fresh and tasty! Lets choose some wines, then order some food. Wine arrives by a very professional waiter, Hugo. he looks smart, friendly, helpful and knows how to serve wine in a professional way. Well done! After this we had a look on the menu and realised the choices on the menu are very poor not seasonal and overpriced but as we are already here lets eat something! Starter takes ages to come, really disappointing, tasteless food, wilted salad and supermarket part baked baguettes croutons, and just doesn`t look appetising. Finger prints on the plates everywhere. Main course coming after a long wait too looks like a pub-grub, lukewarm, lots of gravy (I guess made from gravy cubes) very far from 2 rosette standard, very amateur presentation. But at least plate warmer was working as my wife`s plate was extremely hot, but not the dish, eh! Very disappointing food £14 apparently home made burger, must be kidding, please tell me which part of the dish was home made. I had the same somewhere else in a simple pub just few days ago when I went for a quick meeting with my colleagues and had a meal with just for £7 included a pint. We got offered to see the dessert menu but I was really sceptical to see the choices as I thought they must be the same quality as the previous courses or even just simply bought in from a local bakery so we said no to the waiter. Luckily he was trying to convince us to try some so as we were still pretty hungry so we accepted the challenge. I have to say that was the best choice of the night as they were so delicious and they looked amazing Vanilla brulee and Boxford farm cheesecake. The dinner was really disappointing, never thought food can be this bad at Stoke by Nayland, don`t think we would like to come back ever again or might be just for some wine and some sweet treats or might be just for the spa treatments. Food experience 0/5 but giving 5/5 for desserts so that makes 2/5 in overall Service 1/5 for the funny welcome at the bar plus the food runner had no idea what is going on but 5/5 for Hugo the Spanish waiter so that is 3/5 in total. Price 2/5 as the quality is not matching with the price. We still left some tip and did not complain on the night to anyone as they were major problems not just a little mistake which can be solved right away with a free coffee or a 10 off the bill. We don`t want to receive any free meal or our money back after this review and if management are still happy with everything just please ignore my opinion."
