"was twice in the last weeks. for the first time on Sunday to fry and again on Saturday to the birthday of my daughter. beautiful pub and delightful that there were no last people who have beaten close together. there are also outdoor seating options both front and rear. Eating was really delicious, cooked at home and massive portions. the staff was very friendly and helpful and very sensitive to the needs of our young children. it was nice that there was background music, but nothing too loud. good value for her money. beautiful atmosphere and family friendly. will definitely go back!"

"Waited 1hr 50min for our food despite the fact we pre-booked, pre-ordered, and paid a deposit. They kept using as an excuse that there was another big table that also pre-booked. Why charge a deposit if they’re not going to prepare for it? Once the food finally came it was (not surprisingly) the most generic pub food around. The gammon steak was at best thick bacon. The hunter’s chicken was a chicken sandwich without the bread. After we pressed them on it, they acquiesced and offered a round of drinks after the meal came. Otherwise very little attentiveness while we waited. Hard Pass next time we’re in Hamble. There are so many other better places. Price per person: £20–30 Food: 3 Service: 2 Atmosphere: 3"

"Have visited this place several times now and I know it can get rather busy hence the lack of availability when trying to book , a little disappointed this time , never really noticed until tonight with the heavy rain how dark the car park is! Lack of lighting! Was shown to our table across what can only be described as an ice rink , you should really display signs to let people know the floor is slippery. The drinks order was taken and then after several minutes was asked if we were ready to order food,the starter arrived before the drinks! We ordered very similar mains but were presented with wrongly cooked steaks, despite specifying, and incorrect sauce , the onion loaf which is normally cooked correctly was nothing more than a soggy lump of onion cold in the middle. I must say the waitress took all of our comments on board with professionalism and courtesy. Sorry to have a moan but merely disappointed when this type of venue isn't the cheapest but historically it has been worth the premium."

"from beginning to end, it is a taste experience. we had luck getting a table in this little restaurant on a busy Friday night. we were offered drinks as we looked through the menu. there was approx. 5 6 starters and as many main courses to choose from. on a Friday and Saturday night, I think they only offer the a la carte menu. the midweek also offer a set menu. my man decided to have a swirling pleasure with a gruyere cheese epuff, which was divine and served from a glass tea pot. I had the cured salmon and scallops. both appetizers were divine, beautifully presented and memorable. we would certainly order again. for our main course decided two of our party, the Southdown lamb (educated and I have the dover soles with inherited and minze pure and large chips. (not sure why I didn't make a picture of my eating, but I think I was actually distracted and started eating before I remembered the picture! the dover sole was a fabulous twist on fish and chips. total divine and the most memorable part was the draught pure and the juicy fish share! the southdown lamb was a great hit. not only was it beautifully presented, it was also a very large part. 2 lammsteaks were placed on the dauphinoise kartoffels, together with a partly slowly boiled lamb. we could not resist the baked honeycomb and went alaska and decided to share this court. every bite was amazing. the service was friendly and efficient without being overlaid. eating is brilliant. certainly worth a visit!"

"First time here as were camping up the road. On arrival for the Jazz and Fizz at lunchtime Daniel was warm and welcoming, nothing was too much trouble. The beautiful secluded garden is a delight with thatched pods. We decided to dine here in the evening and sat in the upstairs restaurant. Again Daniel was very welcoming. Our waitress was Grace who was lovely, a very knowledgeable young lady. Both lunchtime and evening you couldn't fault the food, first class. Good wine selection, one small criticism a shame they do not have beer and lager on tap, bottles only. Can't recommend The River Rat highly enough. Will certainly be returning."
