"I phoned to reserve to find courteous and very helpful staff. When we arrived we found the room that was booked for us was fabulous! It was everything we needed, travelling with our year old Labrador. We went for a short walk to settle...our dog and then went into the pub for dinner. The barman poured me a pint of local ale, which didn’t look great and before I could say anything, he apologised profusely and asked if I mind waiting a couple of minutes whist he changed the barrel, I waited about minutes and boy was it worth it!! The menu was not extensive and as a chef that was a good sign. But there was more than enough variety to please most tastes. My wife had a steak, which was classically presented and cooked to perfection. I had pan fried Bass fillets (again beautifully cooked) on an outstanding buttery, lemon and prawn risotto. One of the best risottos I had since visiting Venice!! I’m now hunting for reasons to come this way again!!"

The dining experience was enjoyable with friendly staff and a great playlist. The portions were decent and I highly recommend trying the sweet cake!

We went to celebrate my partner's birthday at this restaurant. The table was decorated with balloons and the food was delicious. The service was excellent, and the atmosphere was cozy. I would highly recommend this place. My partner had a great night thanks to the staff, and we will definitely be returning in the future.

Lots of good things about this place lovely old building, well maintained, very clean, good staff, good beer. The only downside was the food, it wasn’t terrible but should be much better for the price we paid. The pub is in a great location...and should be very busy. They could do really well if they served good value freshly prepared food rather than heated up food.

We chose to eat at a nearby restaurant for convenience. The food was good, but the service was terrible. Once our drinks and meals were brought to us, we never saw our waitress again. We anticipated our plates being cleared and being asked if we wanted dessert or coffee, but in the end, we had to go to the bar ourselves to request the bill. We paid and left without any further interaction. Visualizza piatti

!Welcoming on entry. Sat at a table that was so cold we had to wear our down jackets throughout. Service was punctual and friendly. The food? Went for the safe bet of burgers on a Sunday menu I always find Sunday pub Roasts sadly...disappointing). Burgers were Ok. These days though, I expect a burger to knock my socks off……it didn’t. The accompanying onion rings were greasy. Nuff said. I’m sure this is usually a cracking little place. Maybe we caught it on an off day?

we have not visited for a few months, despite the pub on our doorstep, due to a decline of the atmosphere and service under the new property, but decided to give it an attempt for Sunday lunch. there was a massive improvement. there is a...better selection of bierales that eat (especially sunnay roast) was excellent and the place is much fuller and has a nice bush again. my only grip was the slow service. we sat up and had to wait a while for drinks. it is worth it now!

We booked for a very large family group to come for an engagement meal. Everything was perfect, from the food to the service…to produce so many hot meals on time and for such a big group was an amazing accomplishment by the chef and waiting...staff (many of whom were very young, yet were so professional and did a fantastic job). We were able to use the upstairs area for our party which was beautiful and more private. We would definitely recommend The Cross Keys and will certainly be back ourselves, especially for any future larger gatherings and special occasions. A big thank you to all the staff and a special thanks to Dominika for overseeing everything so capably! Visualizza piatti

I recently moved into the opposite and was really thrilled to find a traditional cubic country pub on my doorstep. this was until I went to an American/Asia menu that doesn't fit the pub or the environment. the atmosphere is missing, as the pub was very quiet on a Saturday night. the general feeling, after the conversation with neighbours and friends, is that a traditional cumbrian classic menu would correspond to the opposite and therefore would probably help fill the place and then obviously increase the atmosphere. when I was told that the chefs don't have any autonomousity on the menu, except for the specialties I was shocked. in my opinion, the menu is too big, too complicated and compl...

Waste of a pub. We recently moved to the area were so pleased our home was near the Cross Keys. We visited on a Saturday afternoon and we were the only customers. There was zero atmosphere. No music or Wi-Fi. The drinks were pricey...too . We decided to give it another go and have Sunday lunch. The restaurant is really nice and the service was good. The food was not that good at all. My partner had the pork no crackling , apple sauce or mash just potatoes, mashed carrot swede tasteless cauliflower cheese, but what really let the meal down was the Yorkshire puddings , you get one they are the supermarket variety. At we expected better. Such a shame about this place as we heard they used to ha...

"We had a disappointing experience during our stay. The bedroom was quite cold, and despite asking for the heating to be turned on, we had to sit in our coats. The bathroom was freezing each morning, and the dining room didn't offer much relief either. The heating was activated for just one hour, which meant the radiator was cold again when we returned to our room. Their cost-cutting measures significantly impacted our enjoyment. We raised our concerns multiple times, but there was no one available when we settled the bill. At £100 per night for bed and breakfast (totaling over £200 including dinner), it was frustrating to be so uncomfortable. Another guest mentioned they had complained about the heating during their previous visit, only to be told there was an ongoing issue. It seems they simply won’t turn on the heating. We won’t be returning, especially since it’s quite a drive to get into town. Regarding the room, we were assigned an attic room (Room 8). It had many steep stairs and low headroom in places. While the bathroom was nice, it was also freezing. The towel rail was pointless since it was stone cold, and my husband had to skip his morning shower due to the chill. We ended up moving to Room 7, which was smaller but slightly warmer despite having a cold bathroom. The bathroom door didn’t shut properly, and the lights were all or nothing. The next morning, we moved our belongings back to Room 8 since they finally decided to turn on the electric wall heater—which they could have done from the outset. It only took the chill off for a little while. On our last night, we experienced a brief boost of heat, but it only lasted an hour. When we returned after dinner, the room was already cool again. As for nearby activities, there’s a park across a busy road, but everything else requires driving to reach shops and restaurants. Safety-wise, the hotel faces a main road, and there are very few parking spaces available (around four); otherwise, you need to park on the main road. Walking to town is possible, but it takes about 15 to 20 minutes downhill. In terms of food and drinks, the breakfast was decent. When asked if we wanted toast, we received just one slice on the same plate as the cooked breakfast. After asking for more, we had to wait a while before we were given another slice. Dinner was acceptable but nothing to write home about; it felt overpriced compared to the excellent authentic Indian restaurant we found in town, which served great food at better prices and opened at 5 PM. Overall, I'd recommend bringing warm clothes for both the bedroom and dining area; we even saw another guest sitting in her coat the entire time."
