"Took my mum daughter out for Sunday dinner. They had a disaabled spot free in carpark a very short walk to entrance. Very inviting pub, bar staff were very welcoming friendly. Nice seating areas seperate res area. Nice beer garden/ seating area out the back. Had a separate specials menu kids menu. I had home made steak kidney pie veg, my mum had scampie my daughter had lasagne decent sized filling portions I liked how the scampi was slightly browned properly cooked lasagne wass slightly burned around the edges of the bowl like it should be. Steak kidneypie had a good meat filling a hard crust. All veg was not to hard not too soft. The chef knew what they were doing. No microwaving at all. Properly cooked. Fairly priced in a nice quaint picturesque village. What more could you ask for? I will be recommending to my friends will be back."

The best Barnsley chop I've ever had. Beautifully cooked and presented. Pleasant friendly staff and owner.

Village pub with nice atmosphere and friendly staff but limited menu and food was average (tasted fairly bland).

Great welcome, great food at reasonable prices. Nicest mussels I’ve eaten. What a great find for a meeting point with friends, definitely be back as there were so many things on the menu I could have chosen. Excellent.

We were on the A1 from London to Edinburgh and we left the main road to eat something and we ground this nice place in a small village. It was good, nice place, not busy on a Thursday late afternoon. We enjoyed the fish'n chips and a baked potato and some chips'n cheese. Recommended!!

Sunday lunch for 4. Great choice of roasts. Served piping hot. Good to find a pub serving Sunday lunch as your mum would have cooked it. None of the pretentious serving the meat on a platter or stacking layers. Reasonably priced, generous portions, good honest pub grub. Reasonably priced. Loved it.

Staying close by and had the choice of two places to eat. Decided on the White Lion and wasn't disappointed. Although busy with a party they fitted 6 of us in and was seated and orders taken within 5 minutes. The size of the meals was larger than expected and the quality was top restaurant standard. The staff were very friendly and attentive to all our needs. If ever we are back in the area we will return for something else off their extensive menu

Not been here for a few years due to health issues, now resolved. Lunch with wife 2 friends. The ladies both had home-made steak pie which they declared to be excellent. My friend I both had Beer battered Haddock chips -best value for money ever! Good quality fish well cooked, more chips than I could eat mushy peas for less than £10! The pub has recently changed hands the new owner greeted us a he was stoking up the log fire! If you want good quality food, value for money excellent service- a little gem!

Fantastic from the start. It was our first visit and we will definitely be back. The Sunday lunch for Mother’s Day was beautifully cooked, the meat so tender and plentiful with vegetables to add and the roast potatoes were lovely . We went as a family with my 7 month old son and they were so accommodating with having a pushchair. Such a friendly place and a lovely environment. It’s a half way point for meeting family so an ideal location for us and such a beautiful village. The food is so reasonably priced too and we had a lovely day to remember for my first Mother’s Day. The barman was so friendly and helpful. Considering how busy the restaurant was, our food came quickly and the table serv...

"The Stag Inn is a delightful looking pub overlooking the small green in the village of Barkston near Grantham. Internally the pub is clean and tidy with a range of two and four seater tables with New England shades of light blue on the painted table legs in the restaurant area. We didn’t venture into the pub side so can’t vouch for the decor in there. We arrived unannounced just after opening time of 12 and were offered a table with no difficulty. There was a menu of the usual offerings of fish and chips and a range of burgers together with roast salmon, chargrilled pork chop, a leek and cauliflower cheese pot pie, ham egg and chips and a vegetable lasagne amongst others. A specials chalkboard hung on the far wall and the crab and prawn salad with Mediterranean bread sounded so good we both opted for it. That was a mistake as we were to find out. The meals were reasonably quick to arrive and were served up in two large bowls with a dusting of paprika round the edges. What hit me immediately was the large flaccid green lettuce leaf draped over the edge of the bowl, together with a whole half-a-lemon that we each had. A small wedge would be perfect. The bread tasted sweet and was as far from the Mediterranean as it could possibly be apart from the occasional input of sundried tomato. What irked me most though was that the bread was delivered up pre-buttered with what looked like some bright yellow catering spread. A small ramakin of real butter between the two of us would work so much better. When asked if everything was okay I mentioned this and was told that chef would be informed. Having said all that the crab and prawn salad was full of flavour and sat on a nice mixed salad of red peppers, lettuce, red onion and cornichons. A word of advice to the wise….. don’t sit at the table near the restaurant counter as this is where the pub’s phone is located. On at least two occasions the phone was left to ring unanswered by the staff, presumably as they were busy elsewhere (the pub was by no means full) and was right behind my head! The volume of the ringer was high and it would have been a more pleasant experience for us if, firstly, it was answered and, secondly, the volume was turned down. On the plus side the staff were polite and helpful but the food not so great."
