"While the service started off a bit slow, the roast dinners at this restaurant were outstanding. Our server, who we believe started her shift at 1pm, was exceptional and very attentive. Unfortunately, we didn't catch her name, but we were seated near the private door by the wine display at table 5. This young lady is truly an asset to your team. Overall rating: Food 5, Service 4, Atmosphere 5."

"My wife and I are regular diners here and often joined by family members. The food is excellent, the service commendable with welcoming and friendly waiters. Unfortunately, our last visit was disappointing. I ordered a large glass of Merlot which is my favourite tipple. However, on this occasion there was clearly an issue with the wine which had a slight brownish tint and tasted spoiled. I asked for it to be replaced. If this was to be conducted in a professional manner the waiter would have brought an unopened bottle and a clean glass to the table. Instead, the waiter returned with a full glass. I tasted the wine and was convinced it was either the same glass of wine or was replaced by wine from the same bottle. Nevertheless, I decided not to pursue the issue. When the bill arrived it appeared higher than was usual. Once again I decided not to query it but thought I would check the bill at home. This was thwarted by the waiter picking the bill up and slipping it into his pocket as we said our farewells. I was later able to do the calculations and confirm we were overcharged by the equivalent of an additional large glass of wine! And we had left a generous tip! We won’t be hurrying back."

"The food at the Cross was exceptional, it has certainly earned its reputation for fine dining. The combination of flavours and presentation was a delight to the senses. A personal highlight being the duck breast I had for my main. The crispy duck egg starter was also very tasty with the hazelnut souffle dessert being the weakest offering of the three courses. Despite the flowery presentation of your server pouring hot chocolate sauce into the top of the souffle into the shape of a cross, the texture was quite unpleasant and the flavour was lacking. Giving you the mouth feel of a vaguely nutty curdled egg. Having tried the tiramisu of someone else in my party, I can confidently say, that is the superior option. Furthermore, despite the service being very polite and attentive when present at the table. We did end up waiting quite a long time to not only order but also between courses. This was supplemented during the first half of our meal with complimentary entrees and bread basket. But when paying £85 per person, you don't expect to be waiting 40+ minutes between my starter and main course with no check ins from the servers. The Cross fell victim to this again with dessert. Some of my party ordered coffee in place of dessert, but instead of it all coming out at once, the coffees arrived 20 minutes before the desserts. It was very busy the night we attended so maybe they were short on staff. Food wise The Cross is everything you'd expect, but the service let it down on this occasion."

"We booked for New Year's Eve. Dinner was superb as always: beef Wellington is a firm favourite and was cooked to perfection. Charlotte is a fantastic host and is so accommodating. I don't drink alcohol but she allows me to bring a bottle of sparkling non alcoholic wine to celebrate the New Year. Our friends order wine and Champagne so everyone is a winner! Great atmosphere this year too. We will be back again, perhaps on Mothers Day."

"3 rd visit to this restaurant with the current owners. Both previous times very good attentive service and excellent food. However on this occasion although food excellent as always the service was far worse . Restaurant was very busy with a one large party. Order was taken promptly and although there was a longer wait for food I could understand that. However after the plates were cleared I was expecting to be offered face wipes not offered! Also no one asked if we would like any dessert or coffee! One person behind the counter seemed more interested in chatting to a pair of dubious looking guys who were drinking at the bar. Customer service was not great and eventually managed to pay the bill and left. I’m afraid that I am not planning to return based upon the customer service on this occasion and would certainly not recommend it to anyone. Sad really as the food was excellent!"
