"Mestre was the first to bring contemporary dining to the island. The owner was a true innovator. Winters were spent primarily in Madrid searching new ideas for his restaurant. Sadly the food once served by chefs is now a dumbed down version prepared by cooks. The menu is much smaller and there are no specials. After 10 years as loyal customers, my wife and I paid our final visit last week. For anyone that never experienced the earlier incarnation, there 's a chance you will be impressed. My wife and I came away somewhat disappointed and quite sad. Ten years ago the menu was what could be described as challenging. Some dishes were obviously work in progress but that was all part of the experience. The owner was on hand to discuss and was keen to get feedback from diners. Last week our meal had no highs and only one dish that impressed. Pre Covid the croquettes were a 11 out of 10. Molten, gooey and a massive umami hit. We have jokingly said they were worth the airfare to Menorca. The generic version served on our recent visit were downgraded to a 7. The second dish was the smoked scallop. The small (was it cut in half) mouthful was served in a shell containing a small pool of soy, sesame oil and lime? Both of us were waiting for a burst of flavour that never materialised. The Thai Pork and squid salad should be downgraded to simple Pork and squid salad. There was no trace of any Thai influences. Absolutely zero Next up was a dish we both found quite offensive. The fish ceviche. Once upon a time this was a taste sensation. Last week, the tiger 's milk associated with the curing was replaced by what tasted like a thickened fish stock. Very weird and unpalatable. Fortunately the day ended with the best dish. Beef flank with baby crispy potatoes. The meat was tender and quickly seared on the plancha. Having said that, if a cook chef got this wrong, they should be flipping burgers at McDonalds. It is worth mentioning that the owner has interests in two other restaurants on the island. One is excellent and the other is still on the bucket list."
